The head coach is responsible for all aspects of his teams success. I will be posting several small lessons that I feel will help each of us play better poker. The game does not give us a road map or step by step instructions. You have to make decisions based on many things:

Your hole cards, stack sizes on table, opponent playing style, position and level are just a few items you need to review every hand when contemplating a call or raise.
The is never a 100% perfect decision. the variables may range. You may be on a draw one hand and win then flop a monster only to lose to runner-runner. I believe it makes sense to increase the size of your winning hands and to limit the size of your losers. Easy right?
If it was that easy players like Josh would win more often. You need to have that 6th sense and make bad moves and good times and great moves at great times.
How many of you have folded a set? A flush? A full house? These are difficult lay downs at times but they are what the best players in the world have to issue doing from time to time. picking your spots is an important part of the game. Pot odds also should be a big part of your game.
Example:
When Aaron bets $200 after the flop and Matt comes over the top for $3600, this is an over bet. Two things could be happening here. Matt is trying to buy the pot or Matt is trying to make Aaron think he is trying to buy the pot. The Pot odds tell Aaron to fold unless he has a good/great hand. No need to risk your tournament here. Pick a better spot.
This is a good example of a player (Aaron) that folds and waits for a better hand, A better spot to make a move. Granted there may be variables like Aaron only has $1200 before his $200 bet. If he has a good hand you make your stand there and hope to double up.
Another example:
Lets say Javier has a set after the flop and his opponent is betting into him on every turn. With a good size chip stack he should and raise to find out were he is in the hand. A re raise may create a sense of either a strong hand for his opponent or a bluff depending on the type of player he is(tight-aggressive-passive). This is a great example of being able to lay down a set when you may be beat. Should not happen often but when you lay down your first set you'll understand. I layed down a 9 high flush in January that I did not feel good about.
Lets review for our slower learning teammates.
You do not need to bet the house on a set, Flush, Strait or Full house unless its the nuts.
Pick your spots. there's always another hand
Play the player
Watch poker to learn.

Happy New Year!

The real Paxi takes home the championship.

As we usher in 2010 we have to tip our hats to Rafael for a big Tournament of Champions win! Starting the year not even on the radar, his game has improved by leaps and bounds over the past year or so. He now sits amongst the best players in the league and will be sure to defend his championship in 2010.

Now ranked number one Peruvian in the league he knocks his brother Javier into the basement. We asked Javier what his plan is for 2010 to regain what he feels is his rightful spot on the final table he said "Ill be back and I still have better hair".

Strong words for the once mighty Jav. We all wish him luck and hope he can find his game in 2010.

Mr Miller came in 2nd twice that night. He lost to Rafael heads up and also took the Saints to beat the Cowboys laying 6 1/2. That makes 2 bad calls at the least. I asked everyone what the chances were that the Cowboys could win that game and everyone said no chance. That means you take the Cowboys and the points every time. Miller will return in 2010 in hopes to continue the 2009 year end run that locked up his final table seat. By the way, Everyone is saying that the Eagles beat the Cowboys this week as well. Cowboys -3 is the spread.

Willey took home the Bronze. Quietly he lurks in every game waiting for us to make that move and he pounces. "I'm All in" from Willey is a hard thing to hear because you know he knows how to play. A former student of yours truly he has taken what I have preached and brought his game to the next level. 2010 will bring more of the same.

Kyle was the last payout in 4th. crushing everyone in his path for the first 5 months of 09 game him the points needed to have a seat in December but a flat Summer and fall carried into December never letting him make the more to immortality. He should return in 2010 will a new mission of consistency. Not a shoe in for December 2010 but you never count him out.

Steve D came in just shy of the cash. Another quiet player who knows the game. If cards come he's deadly, If not he falls asleep. No Loud talking, No drinking too much and no berating comments are ever associated the Steve D. Just solid play. 2010 is sure to bring more of the same.

Scott, Frank and Nowik rounded out the 6-7-8 spots with little fanfare, but our number 9 finisher was carved in stone, easily predicted and a sure fire bet to finish last.

We all know how Matt plays. He's good. He understands the game. He could be one of the best players in the league......but he's not. What makes this Nowik pupil unlike the other successful players I have tutored? Easy. Lack of commitment to the game. He is not a student of the game. He watches the Hartland poker tour on Youtube and thinks that's the way its played at all levels. Now don't get me wrong, the kid has talent. If he didn't he would never have been accepted in the Nowik International School of No Limit Hold-em. He just needs to take what I have taught him (Like Rafeal) and incorporate it into his game.

I believe he should and will commit to playing his best in 2010. All eyes will be on Nowiks work in progress and I wish him luck.

A few players did not get the illustrious invite for December 2009.

Aaron our host was reduced to a lowly dealer for the year end event. A shell of a man, he fought through the overwhelming desire to tell us all to get out and not come back. Still haunted by a few hands over the year he hopes to put 2009 behind him and focus on the new year. He may be a conservative at heart but his poker game economics are less Ronald Regan and more Obamish, Raise raise raise.

Steve C put his family ahead or poker and missed by a hair. My advice? Time to take control and show the wife who's calling the shots

Javier is haunted by trips over trips for 3 months in a row and may never be the same. He is already planning for next December.

Ray got a job and could care less about anything else.

Some others we will all be watching to see if they return as dead money are

Josh - Awful
Dave R - Too Angry
Pete - Still Pissed
Willis - Insane
Adin - MIA
Dan k - Banned
Jane- Wine-o

And that's just to name a few

I for one would like to see more effort out of the rest of you. Some play poor. Others just suck but one things for sure, its time to get better.

A few items the group have requested include:

Better Meatballs
More seafood
Wider menu
Valet parking
More Women players
Less Josh players
Introduce antes
Up Entry to $100 (includes Bounty)
More tournaments
New Cards
Bigger TV's
Massage Therapists in room
Allow Cigars
Bigger Fridge
On Demand Porn
Shuttle to Hungry Tiger

These are just a few items we need to address.

In closing I would like to wish almost all of you a happy new year and good luck in 2010.
The rest of you can kiss my ass and I hope you lose on the river every month in 2010.
You all know what list your on.

The time has arrived

Only nine remain
Its Here. The December nine is set for the 2009 Slow play Saloon Tournament of champions.
A wild year to say the least. We had new players emerge and founding league members struggle.
Several of you embarrassed yourselves along the way and still others built up your own playing reputation.

In this edition we will revisit some great and some not so great moments and players of 2009.

In no particular order

Who can forget our host's several inebriated showings. His consumption rivaling Boris Yeltsin, he imploded several times this year. Not one to take a bad beat well after a few cold ones, he was always good for at least one berating comment on his way to the rail. Just missing the top 9 this year is sure to leave a bad taste in his mouth and I'm sure 2010 will have him return to the top of his game.

Voted the best player in the league for 2009, Javier quietly slipped out of the top 9 and must contemplate his place amongst the elite players. His fellow players voted overwhelmingly earlier this year but he could not recover from back to back months losing with set over set. Another player that can put down the sauce he will have to do some soul searching over the holidays. Will he commit to the game, watch it on TV, practice online and return to greatness or will he be tuned to FOX for Dancing with the stars?

Ray had a great year but came up just outside of the promise land. A quiet player who fared well over the year just could not make the next step. A casualty of the huge jump in the unemployment rate the poker league hit the back burner for a month or so. He has since got back to work and is refocusing his efforts on 2010.

Dan K had a big win in November but not before he took a verbal tongue lashing from Aaron. Into the muck was a bold move from the rogaine chugging ambulance chaser. He has also shown flashes of brilliance over the few tournaments he attended but could not find a way to compete on the level needed to reserve a seat in December. If Aaron does not remove his name from the email invite list I'm sure he will try and step up his game for 2010 and make a run.

Pete has not been back for months. Since the bad luck hit he has not been able to stomach the game. Ending 2009 over 16 points out he will hopefully return to the game he loves with a new sense of urgency to win. 2010 will bring more bad beats, bad calls, bad folds and upset stomachs for all of us. Pete is sure to be on both sides of these events starting in January. He did finish ahead of Josh but most people did. Come back Pete, Ill save you a seat.

Dave R, the grumpiest player in the league by far but also the tannest. The only so called strait guy who goes to tanning salons had a good 2009 but could not commit to enough events. No play no points is the underlining issue with big Dave. When he shows he has a good chance to go far. A good player that was separated from the top players by a measly 14 points. Will he commit to the league in 2010, put down the spray on tanning lotion and bring his "A" game? Attendance will bring his success or it will bring failure again. January is the first test. Start studying.

Josh has quietly become the joke of the league. When poker was a game of luck he could not lose. 2007 had him win the Tournament of champions when everyone showed up just for the meatballs. Since then the league players have improved ten fold and Josh hasn't. A shell of a player that is now considered dead money most months. 2010 will be most important to Josh. He must shake off the sub par play that has embarrassed him for the past 2 years. I am willing to donate over $600 in free tutelage to improve his game going forward. A gift horse, Don't look it in the mouth.

A few others with attendance issues that cost them are Sean M, Mike M, John L and John P.
All were a few good months outside the leader board.

The top 9 players are all looking forward to a great game in December.

It's Here. Do or die time. The Slow Play Saloon final 2009 regular event is upon us. One last shot at history. A chance to sit with the greats of the game and show the world that you belong.

Some players are comfortable with their positions. Others a little nervous, and still more that are already planning for January.
As 2009 winds down I thought we should look back over the past year. With hundreds of suck outs, bad calls, good reads and out of hand cash games, the stories are endless.

Our Points leader (65) had a hell of a year. Scott is the only 2 time winner in 09 and ran away with the points with 7 final tables through October. He is also one of only a few that played in all 10 games this year. I'm not sure what the total points record is but he must be getting close.
Kyle is 2nd in points with 54. That's great news. But he had 51 at the end of may. 3 points in 5 months does not bode well for our follicly challenged cohort. He will be coming into the stretch run badly needing to get something going. November is a time to get back on the winning trail for the one time points leader and prove to the rest of the field that he has what it takes.

3rd in Points is yours truly. 7 final tables but no first place finishes. A 2nd and 3rd were the best places I could post this year and I have to say that's a letdown from where I should be. Still considered the best player that's not Peruvian I feel that my move comes over next 2 months. I'm shooting for the win in November to take the Points lead away from Scott and glide into Decembers Tournament of Champions as the overwhelming favorite.

Chris W is alone in 4th. 4 final tables. a win and a third place finish solidify his place in December. Outside of a perfect storm he will sit amongst the best of the best. Another player who shows every month and quietly earns his points...Unless he has a few beers, then he loosens up and likes to chit chat. 20 points over the past 3 months he comes into November a top 5 player.

Big Frank...What can I say. Frank pays $83 dollars like everyone else but eats $80 worth of tuna and meatballs every month leaving $3 for the entry fee. Aaron has confirmed that the food cost per player has more than doubled since Frank came on board. 5 Final tables and a big win in July has Frank virtually a lock for December.

Mark (Mike) Miller sits in 6th after a much needed win in October. 4 final tables in only 7 attended tournaments puts the aggressive Miller in the top 9 in a precarious position. 39 points is enough to be on the big board in October but it may not be enough come December. Novembers tournament will move someone off the leader board and I'm sure Miller will be there to defend his seat.

Steve C is Sick. 5 Tournaments attended and 3 final tables. He has no time to hang around with the likes of us and only shows to earn enough points to make the year end event. Easily the money leader in Casino play amongst the group he has the skills to be there and make a run at it in December....If he shows. He has no choice but to show in November. He could easily be pushed off the leader board and find himself in he cash game come December.

Tied with Steve C is Steve D. Every tournament was attended. A long cold snap from May through Sept ended when he got back to his 4th final table of the year in October. One win this year keeps him on the edge of the chalkboard. Another must show next month. 2 points separate him from 10th place and a long holiday season.

Aaron
Attends every Tournament
5 Final tables
sits in 9th place
Zero room for error.

Off the board in striking distance we see Rafael, Matt, Ray, Javier and John P.

All of these guys outside of Matt have a good chance but for one reason. Matt doesn't show so he wont make it. October had him on the "ill be there" list only to pull a no show and get bumped off the big board. An earlier post I stated that the good players of years past Josh and Matt would be hard pressed to make the final table. I stand by that statement. They both seem to not be committed to playing their best.

Rafael gets better every month so his chances are very good

Ray started 09 on fire. 4 final tables in first 4 months but has struggled since. November will give him a chance to get back on the board where he sat for most of the year.

Javier needs to dodge bad luck. 3 months in a row has sent him to the rail with great hands that don't hold up. He may end up being the 2nd best Peruvian in the league.

John is quietly sitting 7 points out. He needs a big night.

Bryan has made the final table every time he played. One show, One win. 16 points. took the winnings. Aint been back.

Other Notables:

Bob Sr. will be happy to put this year behind him. 6 tournaments and 6 points is a tough one to swallow. He will look to bounce back in 2010

Dave R has 2 final tables in only 6 shows. If he played more he would be a guy that might be right there in the end. Just cant commit enough time to the game.

Pete took October off. Still nursing a wound that will not heal until he picks himself off, dusts himself off and gets back in the poker saddle. With a win he could make the final table but will need a ton of help. A win = 16 points and puts him at 39. A long shot but doable.

Willis is Willis. Ultra aggressive and that suits him great in cash games. When he has the cards he is very dangerous. When he doesn't he is happy to start the cash game.

Sean M is keeping us all guessing. You get a read on him one month then don't see him again for a few. He has played the last 3 and scored a big 2 place finish in September. Another player that with better attendance could be a force in 2010

Mike M, Ryan, John L and Adin will all be looking to get it going early in 2010.

We will see someone or maybe a couple people get bumped in November. You all know who you are and what you need to do. Bring the "A" game or stay home and save your $83

I assume we should have a good crew next month with lots on the line. The last event of the year before its invite only. Aaron is planning on a side tournament for the rest of you in December as long as there is enough interest so let him know.

November 13th promptly at 7:00pm we start the last chance for some of you to prove your worth and show that you deserve to be invited back next year.

Aaron would also like to discuss some rule changes for next year. If you have some ideas or would like to suggest a change please forward all information to:

Tensions run high in September. Protesters gather in front of Matts Work.

Another month and another angry Matt. Considered the Phil Helmuth (minus the talent) of the league he again cant understand why other people sometime have better hands.

He swears he's been just plain running bad. Cant get traction and keeps running into hands. Has bad luck, blah blah blah. News flash doofus.....That's poker. This game does not care if you're a half ass player that's reckless, A tight player who knows the game inside and out or a world class poker phenom that runs his own blog, The game has an unfair side.

You see it all the time. Aces get cracked. Someone makes a move with 7-6 off suit and flops a straight. Someone is in the bathroom and comes back late to play a full house. Its an painful game. Most have been on both sides of the cards and understand that that's the game.

It still stinks. No matter how many times you see it it always seems to happen to you when you can least afford it. Some people deal with it well. Others cant stomach the beat.
Without the monthly update I am forced to post without the advantage of seeing the exact Rankings and points YTD.

Sitting right on the cutoff for Decembers invite only event, Matt has no tolerance for other players.

If you call or raise with a sub par hand its a bad play.

If he does it he felt weakness or was making a move.

If you go in with better hand and he wins the odds were with him. If you go in with a better hand and lose it was a bad play on your behalf.

Are you seeing a pattern here? Now its not Just Matt. Everyone in the league has their own way of playing.

Josh likes to play aggressive and then watch from the rail before 8:00 PM

Frank likes to play 50% of his hands next to the slow cooker

Aaron always has to sit near the computer

Javier must drink his weight in beer

I personally have no quirks or patterns that are easily followed. Similar to Phil Ivey.

The top 9 are not set by a long shot. Every month we are seeing new players either move others off the list or at least deny them the points they so desperately need.
Players like Javier and Aaron are flirting with playing on the kiddie table in December.
Both Steve's are also teetering near the edge of the top 9.
Ray, John, Miller, Pete and Rafael can see the promise land and are a good showing away from a top 9 placement.
Dave R with his September win also gets into position to have a chance. He had 4 points coming into September and he is a win away from the big board. Quite a move.
As soon as the results are sent out and the points are tallied I will update the site to reflect where we all sit.
October is coming.
Rake
Football
Rake
Then November.
2 left.
Top 9 or not you have to show to protect your spot.
Ill be there.
D

UPDATE.

STATS ARE IN
!

Statistically no one is out.

Last place has 1 point. If you win twice you will have a total of 33 points. You are mathematically still in it but need a ton of help along with Back to back wins in October and September.

From #19 (Rafael) and up you have a great chance of making the chalkboard with a good showing or two.

MATT MAKES THE BIG BOARD!!!!

This is not a misprint. With a fourth place showing in September he has 34 points. This moves Aaron into a tie for 10th with Ray. Two points behind Javier who sits in 9th. A very tight race.

Scott and Kyle are in. Chris W and Myself are almost assured of a seat baring a number of events that are almost statistically impossible.

Frank, The two Steve's and Javier are vulnerable. With the changes we have seen over past 2-4 months I assume that a few of these fine players will not be on the December big boy table.

October 23rd will end the hopes of many players as well as cement others placement in the top 9. The points are there for everyone to make a statement. Tell the league that they are there to play and win.

Whats in store for October?

Can our #1 voted best player in the league get the points he needs to stay on the board?

Can Josh Get that elusive win and jump ahead?

Will Matt go on tilt after a bad beat and donkey himself off the list?

Many questions will be answered come 10/23/2009. We will remove the mark of "still has a chance" from the majority of players and narrow it down to a select few.

Some will have a great chance, Some a good one. Others will need the coming of Jesus.

What list do you plan on being on?

The first annual East vs West Poker showdown is upon us and the trash talking has begun before we have even been formally introduced to each other.

Lets get underway.

I have been told that some on the west team are a legal savvy bunch of players. With a few ambulance chasers on the East team I can tell you that understanding the complex legal system and playing poker are two vastly different things.

While you may be able to convince a jury that McDonald's coffee should never be hot enough to burn its a whole different story in attempting to push a good player off a hand.

The East team has a few Left leaning, Tort Reform opponents that prove you can practice law and win but its not related.

Disclaimer

Any reference to ambulance chasing, Tort reform or Lawsuits against McDonald's for coffee that is too hot in no way reflect the

quality of work(Coughbullshitcough) or dedication that the majority of attorneys have when taking on a case.

Lets use Josh as an example. I decent player that has has some success in the past on the felt. 2008 was a good year for our East team captain but 2009 was better in litigation results than in poker. The two just don't do well hand in hand.

Dan Schwartz comes in as the West Captain. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Mr Schwartz but he has curiously heard of me. I am sure the news of my high end poker skills have extended far and wide but west of the river? I can only assume that the west team will be shooting for yours truly come Friday. This of course is not new. I'm sure they have watched from afar, waiting for the day to be sitting in the same tournament and maybe the same table with someone with this poker pedigree. I of course will be just another face in the crowd. I fellow tournament player trying to earn those all important points for my team.

Fridays event

28 players, Two Teams. One goal

Over the past 2 weeks or so, Josh and Dan have hammered out the ground rules with hundreds of emails for Fridays event. Not everyone will be thrilled with all aspects of the format but I think we have come to a pretty good compromise and it looks to be a great time. I'm sure the backlog at Pullman & Comley LLC. will be caught up next week after the event is through.

Without knowing the caliber of players in the West I still have to put the East as the favorite. I am comfortable with saying that the East showcases some of the best poker players I have played with. That includes many tournaments at the Mohegan Sun and the WPT events at Foxwoods. Now the west may prove me wrong but that has not happened since 1977. I swore that Darth Vader could not be Luke's father and was wrong.

We have placed quite of bit of faith in Scott when it comes to the menu. My post tournament blog will address the result.

As the big day gets closer I look forward to meeting some new players and playing some poker. I for one will be there around 5:30 - 6:00. I will be offering my usually pointers and casual banter throughout the evening. I can guarantee that Ill offend at least a couple people so if your thin skinned please make sure your make that obvious early and Ill place your name on my "douchbag without a sense of humor" list. then there is no chance I hurt your little feelings.

Lets all plan on having some fun and maybe do this again.

See you all on Friday. You can buy me a beer, a cigar and maybe even gather poker knowledge as I spin some poker yarns.

Are you ready for some football????!!!!!

Its here folks. The 2009 NFL season is upon us and fantasy leagues are gearing up for the long hard season ahead.
While Many of us prepare for our drafts, Printing cheat sheets, Buying books and listening to the so called experts, we all still have the poker itch to scratch. September brings with it the final chance for some players to make that desperate move up the leader board and if not make the top 9 at least get close enough to make it in come October or November.

3 Games left. Not a whole lot of time to sit back and hope to sneak in. Its time to play. Everyone with their name on the standing still has a chance to make it in. The lower you are the more difficult but its still mathematically possible.

Some of you need a bunch of wins and shows. Others need to just make the final table a few times and still others just need to keep ahead of the guy behind you in the top 9.

These are the guys just outside of the promise land.

Ray
John P
Matt
Miller
Pete
Josh
Rafael
Bryan
Willis

This select group of players have the opportunity of joining the elite in the top nine come September. Now months ago I pretty much wrote off Matt and Josh due to their horrid play. Their monthly showings were more amusement for the group then a threat or real competition. That has all changed. They have both stated that they now are playing for real and said they have re doubled their efforts to play at their best going forward. Can they make me eat my words? Prove that Uptheodds.com is not as in the know as they think? Only time will tell.

The top 9 by no means are sitting pretty either.

Aaron is a sneeze away from hosting a December poker tournament he cant play in. With no "best hair" votes he has to wonder how Kyle is ahead in tournament and hair points.

Javier after winning back to back polls is sitting in a vicarious spot. 2 points separate him from a hearty December welcome to see you in January. Our next poll will have to be something like "who looks more Norwegian", Just to make sure Javier does not have upper hand.

Steve D and Yours truly only have a 5 point cushion. Steve Being a heck of a player and yours truly the odds on favorite every month I feel comfortable but still will be tested.

Steve Frank and Chris W have a nice cushion but a few no shows or bad months and they can have November become a do or die month with lots of pressure.

Scott and Kyle still sit above everyone. Looking down their noses at the rest of us. They both should feel very comfortable with their positions. By no means set in stone but it would have to be the perfect storm to unseat one of them, let alone both.

Were do you sit?

10th - 18th have a great chance to make it up the board

19th - 23rd are still in it but need at least a win, a second place showing and a strong third tournament.

24th - 41st are on life support. over next 3 months you must have at least 2 wins, Some of you have to win all 3.

Still, the months tournaments give everyone the opportunity to make some cash and that invaluable playing experience.

As Aaron contemplates the next date we all wait with baited breath. New questions will arise this month.

Will Big Frank ask for a recount on "best hair"?

Will Josh Make another quiet appearance and make the chalk board?

Can Ray retake what he believes is his rightful position amongst the leaders?

Should Rafael get his first win will he put a doubt in the players heads on who the best Peruvian in the league really is?

Is it possible for Willis to earn more in the cash game then I make in a week?

All these questions and more are coming soon to a table near you.

So lets get out there and get our drafts behind us, watch the Dallas Cowboys devour the competition and hope our back up running back turns out to be this years diamond in the rough. After that its back to the felt.

See you in September.

Big Frank makes big move up the leaderboard.

Aaron (as always)with a beer and his trademark visor haircut

Another month and another move. Frank with a huge win makes a giant leap into the top 9. While Frank makes the list, Josh keeps his December dream alive with a strong 2nd place finish.

Frank, Showing up and hour late still doesn't believe Kyle played. He did Frank,
He left in a hurry.

With Frank moving up someone has to move off the lis
t. That someone I believe will be Ray. He is still tied with Aaron but the tie breaker with a 2nd place finish this year goes to the host.

Willis was out with his traditional 2nd round
exit. Then won over 2 bills playing cash.

Miller keeps pace with Josh still lurking with players like Rafael, Pete and Matt.
Aah Matt, Another month and another point. To his defense he did play well but I still think he is over matched in this league. He sucked out on the turn only to get rivered right back to be sent packing by yours truly. He also had a full boat beat b
y quads earlier. He'll be back with more Bud light cans and stories of 3 putts and fat chicks I'm sure.

Some out of the norm items for the night:

My tables was full of talk on sword fighting, Viagra and other subjects that seemed a bit out of pla
ce.

Josh was quite and played well.

Javier was not drunk.

Red Sox came back in 9th to win a game.

This is why you never shake Steve's hand
I will update the standings with my usual commentary as soon as they are forwarded.

Viva Peru!

With the voting behind us, our good friend Javier has run away with the top spot voted by the players in the league. 15 votes, Over 60% of the voters selected Jav for this prestigious award.

Aaron came in 2nd and I third.

The Steve's came in tied for 4th. The rest are irrelevant. The group has spoken. As of August 2009 Javier is considered the man to beat. As a past student of mine I am proud of his achievement.

Now lets discuss this weeks gathering. Friday is close. There are a few players that must attend, No excuses. Everyone on the top 9 has to be there to protect their spot. The next 10-15 players on the board have to come and shoot for the win. With only 4 Tournaments left the points will be harder to find every month that goes by.

Lets look at a few examples.

John L is sitting with 13 points in 18th place. a win gives him a total of 29 points. Enough to possibly bump him into the top 9

Rafael needs even less. 17 points in 14th place. a win puts him at 33 points. a second place finish gets him very close to pay-dirt.

Frank can sneeze his way in. Only needs a single point to make the move.

Josh may need the coming of Jesus to make it. And sence it was his people that nailed him to the cross I wouldn't hold your breath. 8 points is a long way away but is doable. If he can take what I have taught him and make a couple moves over the next 4 games he may prove us all wrong......I cant even write that with a straight face.

John P. Pete and Miller all are within striking range as well.

Chris T lives in New Jersey. One Showing and he has more points then 23 other players..........This is unacceptable. I am expecting better play from all of you this month.

Matt has all but guaranteed his spot on the final 9 come December. Can he return to his days of glory or is he the Big Papi of Poker? Only time will tell.

Now to give a sence of Calm Ill ask this.....Who is Davin Moon?

Anyone?

How about Eric Buchman?

These guys are the current #1 and #2 in the WSOP Main event. 2 guys that no one knows and Davin Moon is playing in his first WSOP ever. Won a satellite to get in.

So lets go people. I have a feeling our own little December 9 is not set in stone yet. I think we will see some more movement this month.

Will you be there to stake claim to your seat?
Play in December?

Ill be there to try and protect my spot.

See you Friday.

Summer Showdown Results

We had three regulars head down to the Mohegan Sun this week and only one came back with a cash.
Steve C played during the week and with over 700players he found his way to a short stack and the rail around 200th. No cash on this trip.
Javier and I played in Saturdays $600 NL event along with about 330 players. I was bumped in 70th with no cash. Javier on the other hand came in 27th and made the cash.
While I exited Saturday evening around 11:00, Javier returned Sunday at 1:00 to continue his quest. His last hand had him short stacked under 100k and all in with a pair of Tens. With an AK caller, the dreaded Ace appeared on the flop.
Still a great showing and another reason he leads the voting for the top 5 players in the league.
The rest of you that didn't show should be ashamed of yourselves. The way to better your game and improve your poker skills is to play with better people, take your lumps and learn from your mistakes. There is only so much you can learn from a book.
Over 40 players in the league and 3 people represent. Now I'm giving notice to the league.
Here is your link to Foxwoods Big stack for August 18th - 23rd
I have already took Saturday the 22nd off and plan on playing in the $560-40 No limit.
Its a Saturday (just like this month was)
Almost a Months notice.
I expect a better turnout for August.
Congrats to Javier
Ill see most of you donkeys at Aaron's on 8/14

The Top Ten!

Well the voting is done. The League has spoken and I have narrowed the list down to the final 10. With twenty one of you casting votes there are few surprises. Lets go over the results.

With only 4% of the votes, Mr. Miller came in with a whopping 1 vote(I assume he voted for himself) As an aggressive player I think he may be better than the results reflect. He tends to splash around in more than his fair share of pots and that loose play may be costing him, and not just in the poll.

Big Frank and John L come in next with 14% of the votes cast their way. With 3 votes each they two have some soul searching to do. Both are within reach of the leaderboards elusive seats and Big Frank is so close he can taste it. August is a few weeks away. Football, raking leaves and Game 8 of 11 will be here very soon. With no time to spare these two need to bring their "A" game from here on out.

Ray Sits alone with 19% of the votes. His 4 total votes matches the amount of times he sucks out per tournament. As the "quiet player", He sits back lurking in the shadows waiting to spring his trap. He sits tied for the last position for Decembers Tournament of Champions. Frank is 4 points behind, one for every vote Ray received.

With 5 points and a 23% approval rating, Josh is on life support. 21st place and with nothing on the horizon for this past champion he is starting to reminds us all of Brett Farve. Past his prime but holding on to that glimmer of hope we all know has faded. It may be time for our good friend to retire to the announcers booth.

Kyle and Scott are tied with 7 votes each. 35% of the voters think these two belong in the top 10 and the standings prove this to be true. They are sitting one and two on the leaderboard and barring a complete meltdown (Also called a Wojo) these two should be there in December.

Chris W and Pete sit side by side with 38% of the votes saying "yes". July watched Chris make a huge move up the chart to be tied for 3rd and Pete pull within 9 points out of the top 9 players. Both these guys have shown they can play with the big boys and are both in the top 10 players.

Log jam at 42%. 4 players. Aaron, Matt, Steve D and Myself. We all sit with 9 votes each. With Matt's 2nd place showing last month he staked claim to redemption. Stating he would make the December game, he is ready to put his lack-luster play from earlier this season behind him. Aaron Steve D and myself have only 3 points that separate us from a December invite or a long cold holiday season.

Javier and Steve D both received 10 points. 47% of you think they deserve to be placed in the top 10. I have to agree. Both have earned their place in this elite club and have shown that they know the game. Javier found his way back up to be tied for the last seat available and Steve made a huge move and 30 points total. Both of them are one slip away from gone but with their skill sets, my tutelage and some good old fashion luck, I think they will find a way to play in December.

The Final List (In No Particular order)
Top 10

Matt
Aaron
Javier
Steve D
Dave N
Kyle
Steve C
Scott
Pete
Chris W

I must agree with the masses on this vote but the next list will have to drop 5 more. Another poll that will be non binding will be posted soon and I implore all of you to vote. The next one will be tough. Some good players will have to go.

The 5 that did not make the cut will have something to prove in August. The next list may have a few subtractions and maybe even a few additions. Play your way onto or off the list. You don't have to win but you have to know the game.

I only had two officer, I swear!

Aaron driving the big white bus Saturday morning

With an early exit this month, our host pulled a Boris Yeltsin and drank his weight in beer. Last year when he was pushing 250 pounds he may have gotten away with only a slight headache. This year is a different story, and not only with the tolerance level.

With 29 points, Aaron is now tied for the last Tournament of Championship position available and he cannot afford to wear the beer goggles going forward. Players like Frank, Matt and Pete are right behind with the next 4 tournaments having huge ramifications. Along side Aaron is Javier and Ray. After drinking 7 different brands of beer and at least 2 of each, He most likely spent a fair share of time in the restroom on Saturday.

The next 3 on the list are in no means much better. With 30 points and the big win Steve along with Chris W and myself have very little room for error. Tied for 4th place as of today is meaningless. 10th place is only 3 points below and all players in the top 19 have the points to pass us next month, knocking some of us off the leaderboard is a possibility. Now you all know I will be on my "A" game again next month as always and barring a bad beat, make the final table like almost every month.

Steve D is alone in 3rd. With a very quiet evening behind him he too needs to remain on guard. Only 4 points ahead of 4th place he could find himself slipping closer to the exit with a bad showing. As one of my finest students I believe he has the talent to survive and make me proud. A young padawan learning from the poker jedi master.

Scott and Kyle returned to their old ways. They were seen very early milling around the food, discussing Pokemon cards and Star Trek conventions. Known as the uncool players in the group they still seem to find a way to stay on top of the leaderboard. Both with over 50 points they still remain as close to a shoe in for December as you can be. The numbers look better every month for these two. I'm sure their poker sponsors (tough skins jeans & The national Association for Women) are looking forward to their continued success.

With Frank leaving first he yielded his top 9 position and finds himself on the outside looking in. With Matt, Pete and Rafael all having a strong showing they too find themselves knocking at the door.

After the tournament, Matt strongly stated:

"I will be in the top 4 by years end"

After his second place showing this month a win next month puts him just outside of that goal. I have always said I think he has the talent but does not apply what i have taught him to the game well enough to be consistent. He stated he is back and ready to return to sit amongst the elite players. He guarantees a year end seat will be his.

"Little makes big Move"

With a 3rd place showing, Heeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrs Johnny! The nice showing also brings him into striking distance of the leaderboard. A tough hill to climb looking forward but with a few more nice showings, he may be the one to send someone home for the year in November.

There were 3 sets of Quads this month alone. Quad 10's, Jacks and Kings all made an appearance. Along with countless suckouts, this month is sure not to sit well in many players guts. Frank and Javier both had Aces cracked. AK vs AK Turned a flush to take out yours truly and Pocket 2's crippled pocket 8's when the board displayed another deuce.

A few surprising missing players included Bob Sr, Willis and Dave R. They are low on options if they want to make this years big show in December. Play for the win or play in January 2010.

Josh is still wallowing in 21st place with 8 points. Ousted by yours truly he spend the latter part of the evening doing his best to imitate Phil Helmuth with one of his temper tantrums. A shell of a player he down to his last couple chances to make a move. I was told prior to my joining the league he was one of the best and now that I'm in full time he cant seem to make a move up the leaderboard. Coincidence? I don't think so. The days of easy lunches is over my friend. We are on the next level of play. Are you coming up?

Aaron's Neighbor Mike has one tournament under his belt and cashed. A new face that we will need to learn, but if Fridays results mean anything we all should take heed. New blood. Time to figure him out.

The Poll is up and voting has begun. Its not binding and the list may change from month to month. We have had 9 voters so far and 52 visitors so whomever did not vote yet take a look and place your bets.

August is on the way. Vacations, Fantasy Football and other events may open the door for some to make a move. we may even see:

Aaron with another Drunken tirade

Matt Make good on his promise

Big Frank battle his way back into the top

Lots of changes coming next month for sure. The leaderboard is tight and many will rise and fall. Every decision going forward is magnified and an error or misplay could cost you your seat. Do you play for the win? Do you play for a seat? Do you play for the point?

Tick Tock Folks

I'm planning on being there

Are you?

The Dutiful Daughter

Makes Aaron's table's look like crap.

The rankings start here!

It seems like every month we have a player emerge. Someone who stakes claim to points and moves up on the leaderboard. Now with Aaron's awarding of points based on placement it's easy to say the points leader is the best player correct? But. We all know who the real top players are.

Now don't get me wrong. Many on the leaderboard are great players and will rank high on my list. To be fair some are not but play well enough to sit amongst the best.

We all have caught the World Poker tour and World Series of poker on the TV and said "I can do that". I have news for some of you. You can't do that. Most of you would be out quicker than you can say "I'm all in"

Again, Don't get me wrong. Its not that your horrid as much as you just don't play at that level.

If any of you have played at the Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods Tournaments over the past year you will understand what I am talking about. Its all about bringing your game to the next level.

As we rank our fellow players here on Uptheodds.com we need to take all aspects into account.

Some of the guidelines I will use to evaluate the players are:

results

knowledge of the game

games played

opponents opinion

decision making

Etc.

We need to understand that many players are still in the learning process. trying to learn the nuances to the game and improve their skill set.

With only a select few ready for the Big Casino tournaments there is still a large amount of players (with some guidance) ready to make the next level.

As I rank the top players I am sure to get some grief. Players who feel they deserve to be placed amongst the elite players of the league will feel left out and want to vent their anger towards me, the executive editor of the site.

Ill rank the top 15 and following posts will narrow them down.

If you're too sensitive or just a full fledged ass then stop reading now. I don't want to hear any crying going forward.

The following are in no specific order. They are being posted randomly as

they are picked from a hat.

Now a few of you may be thinking you belong in this list. You may and you may make this list with a few nice tournament placings. Until then my list stands.

There is a few on the list that barley nudged others off and they will not make the top 10 to be posted soon. Lets look at he players short on points but big on potential.

The lowest current player in points is Josh. A donkey by most standards, I have seen him compete on the big stage at Foxwoods WPT. I have to give him his props and place him in the top 15. Will he warrant a spot come Monday? Only time will tell.

Matt's the Next. His play has been, to be kind, pathetic. A player that others used to fear is now just a face in the crowd that looks desperate. He has the tools but just doesn't have the will to win. last year a shoe in for the top 10. This year, not so much.
While Miler makes the top 15 his cell phone may be his demise. Ringing 12 times a night, he may be distracted from the game at hand. Let's hope the cell stays in the car this month and he shines like we know he can.

There are a few just outside of the top 15 that deserve recognition.

Dave R should be there but a tough 2009 is costing him.

Bryan needs more play for an honest overview

Can Rafael move to the next level and onto the big board?

Will Willis conform to tournament play from cash and become deadly?

There are many more just outside my top 15 that have the skill but either have that poker flaw, just don't attend enough tournaments or have had too much

bad luck to warrant a top 15 placement.

My top 10 follow this months tournament. The top 15 are not immune in being bumped. Every month brings new play and new rankings.

Where will you place?

Is December in reach?

I'm hoping to see your best.

Tomorrow

Friday

Ill be there.

Will you?

D

Has an Ace ever looked so Good?

Friday July 10th
7:00 PM

2009's Game number 7 is now officially scheduled.

Since the June tournament we have said good by to a few famous people. Billy Mayes, Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon looked to be all short stacked and ended up on the big rail in the sky.

A few days later we got the news that Michael Jackson also went all in with the second best hand. Rumor has it that the real reason was food poisoning, I guess it was too many 7 year old nuts.

Looking at the current points standings you can begin to sort out the top players from the rest of the field. The top 9 are full of top players with a few question marks mixed in. Just outside the top 9 there are a number of players that are running out of months to win those elusive points. There is still enough time but to miss a month now may cost you dearly in December.

Its now or never for the lower 3rd of the leaderboard. They must place high in several of the final tournaments to have a chance. With 9th place holding 24 points, a win and the 16 points associated with it can potentially bring a player from 19th into the top 9. If your in 19th or lower you have no option but to show every month and play at your best.

We are getting reports that Josh will make his return this month. With 7 points he is one of those players that needs to take his game to the next level. A win could bring him into striking distance of the top 9 and in the past he has shown the mental fortitude to play above his skill level.

While Scott T and Kyle may feel comfortable with there year end situation they too need to be vigilant. A slip here or there with a good run from a few just outside the top could potentially evaporate one or both of their leads and make Novembers tournament a do or die situation. I'm confident they will both be there and be playing at their best.

I have the utmost faith that Steve D will be playing in December as well as Aaron, Albeit for different reasons. Steve D is by far one of the strongest players in the league. A player that knows the game and is one of my finest students. Aaron is an up and comer in poker. Not yet the player he could be but with his familiarity with everyone in the room he has the upper hand.

Ray is in 6th and seems to defy the odds every month. Just ahead of yours truly he has a couple cashes this year and seems to almost always find a way to get the points he needs. The quiet type of player you don't realize he is even in the room until he sucks the 3rd Five out to beat you. He is currently on my shit list for that play and I'm hoping for payback soon.

Big Frank tripped his way into the top 9 last month. With a Tournament record 22 trips to bar for snacks he holds a slim lead over Javier. Four points is all that separates Javier from the promise land but with his recent lackluster play he may need to crank it up a notch so not to be left out. He must place in the points to get the invite in December. Frank is sure to be watching the leaderboard closely. You get a point to show, but with only 5 months left the pressure is on to make the final table or the 60 day wait between November and January 2010 may seem like forever.

Pete will look to make Scott T pay for Junes ugly suck out. A set of 10's is a hell of a hand, Scotts call was not a bad one but Pete was not happy seeing the set of Aces on the turn to cripple him and send him home early. Scott be pre warned. Pete has his own shit list started and you may be on it.

Willis, Miller, Rafael and Russ are all lurking just outside. It will only take a few of these guys in the top 4 in July to move some players off the leaderboard. As they look forward they have no option but to show from here on out.

Now for Matt. Poor Matt is sitting in 18th place. 11 Points. Now known as the John Daly of the league he really needs to:
A: Be sent down to Double A Poker
B: Suck it up and play like we know he can
C: Quit all together and play in slot tournaments

Now this may seem harsh but poker is not patty cakes. A degree of criticism should be expected when a players performance is sub par. I for one feel like he could return to be a good player someday, but a great player may be too much to ask.

There was a game last Saturday that a few regulars attended. Willis was there. Where do we think he came in? You guessed it. First out and off to the cash game. Javier and Rafael both came and donated their cash as well. As for myself I came in 2nd. A pair of 10's and Big John with a Q9 off-suit gets a queen to end my run.

A good time was had by all and rumor has it that Javier will be having a warm up later this month. The Mohegan Sun is having a great tournament at the end of the month and yours truly will be playing in the $600 buy in on Saturday the 25th of July. Click below for all the details.

FRANK MAKES BIG MOVE (To Buffet)

With June now in the books we have seen a few players make some moves. Some staking claim to a top 9 position, Others stating "we ain't out yet". And still others that have slipped again this month only to find themselves on the outside looking in.

June in Done. That means 6 of the 11 tournaments this year are completed and with only 5 more to go it becomes more important than ever to play at your very best. To make the top 9 means a ticket to the big dance in December. 42 players have points in the 2009 Tournament of Champions but only the top 9 in points get an invitation at this years final table.

With a possible 16 points going to the winner next month, a player with only 1 point today could be tied for 9th with that win. 17 points is the cutoff as of today. Just another reason to not miss a month. We all have a chance to make it but we have to play to get there. 5 Tourneys left does not leave a ton of wiggle room.

June was a very odd month for results. We had some unbelievable moves up and down the leaderboard. While some solid players found the cash game early others that can usually make it home before the 8:00 ABC movie of the week starts made the final table.

I for one had a sub par showing. 12th place. To be honest I should have been gone long before but tripped on a few good luck cards including pocket Aces in the big blind. Ill be back in July to regain my dominance and keep pace on the leaderboard.

With two Trenholm's in the house we needed a few extra windows open to keep the Slow Play saloon vented properly. Both made the money. With the win, Scott takes the lead over a absent Kyle while his bother Chris drives 4 hours one way to take 4th. Now when any Trenholm makes the money in a poker tournament is cause for suspicion. When two make it there is a call for a investigation. We have all seen Scott play. In May he is out first, then June he wins? I believe that the Trenholms may have been sending signals to each other. I did notice Scott winking at Big Frank a few time while trying to get his brothers attention.

Now Big Frank made his move into the top 9(and to the food 15 times) at the expense of Javier. Javier was pinched early when a well hidden set sent him to the cash table very early. I think I heard him mumble "Guano" when he got the news he was out. Pete took a horrid beating and was in his car before we finished clapping for him. This of course has its benefits, More cookies for the rest of us. With a set of tens on the flop he gets punished on the turn when a set of Aces cripples him. A few hands later he breaks the current land speed record on the way to his car. Bad luck Pete but you are still only 6 points out of the top 9.

Javier on the other hand is now in tenth. 4 points out with 5 to go. After a few Slafinwitzens and the cash game until 3am I am sure Sunday was a day of reflection. Cash game was nice to him but at what price he asks? Tick Tock Jav. 5 to go and you only get a point to show. Will Javier be there? With a win in July he can move into 3rd place so don't count him out just yet.

Willis on the other hand was on fire. After riding his pet donkey to the tournament he may want to trade it in. An unbelievable run of cards punished player after player on his way to a 3rd place finish and a huge move up the leaderboard into 14th. Now only 10 points away from the promise land he sets his sights on July and another cash.

Aaron was the official Bubbleboy. No money buts he does get those important points. He is now tied for 5th with Ray. Steve Jumped all the way up to 13th place with a strong 2nd place showing. This was just a warm up for this weeks Summer Survivor Series at Foxwoods. Lets just hope he does not embarrass the league with his normally sad play. He will be playing Pairs with Javier and I'm sure we are all wishing them luck. Steve.Quick heads up, Keep Javier away from the bar and you have a better chance.

Rafael made his first final table at Aaron's house but fell in the standings to 17th. Mark M ran out of gas just prior to the final table and finds himself dropped a few pegs to be tied for 13th.

Matt on the other hand was the first to leave only getting 1 point more than Josh. Dropping to 18th he has a paltry 11 points. By no means out of it but he may be the John Daly of the Manchester league, good years ago, but a little too much Hooters and Bud lights since then. He mentioned a golf outing prior to Saturdays event, I hope he played better there.

Russ pulled a no show. Now Dave R was there but if you blinked you missed him. he found the cash game very early. With 4 points and sitting in 25th place he is not looking good this year. On tilt early, the cards never materialized. Still there is a chance with a couple good months he can sneak up on the leaderboard but I wouldn't hold your breath. I think less tanning booths and more practicing may help his game.

Chris W exited quickly as well as Bob Sr on a confusing all in call. I may have missed something on that one. A couple people had previous engagements and could not join us this month. Jane was a no show but did leave strict instructions not to let Javier near the Wine Cellar. We are told that Josh and Kyle had a magical weekend in the Amish hills of PA.

In all not a bad Summertime tournament. 24 players, Several suck outs and many meatballs all led to a good time had by all. Now we turn our attention to July. Vacations and other scheduling conflicts will leave room to move for the players in search of those elusive points.

Can Javier make it back? Will Frank hold on to his precarious 9th place seat? Can Dave R play that bad again?

All these questions and many more will be answered over then next few remaining tournaments. I for one will be there to defend my place on the leaderboard. Will You?

Ill see you on the Felt.
