Late June brings Foxwoods next Big Event. The Real Deal, The Spring into Summer Survivor Series. Monday, June 22 - Saturday, June 27
Buy ins from $120 to $1000 should cover all players and bank rolls. They also included an Omaha and HOSE event so the tournament should draw a wide range of players.
A few of the Friday night Manchester league players will be attending including our very own Paxman, Fresh off his 34th place finish in the Mohegan Sun Spring Showdown N.L Hold em event.
Now most of us have played at Foxwoods. Its a tough room to play your game, you need to be able to switch gears at a moment's notice. Lots of strong players and a good mixture of dead money. Problem is sometime dead money is the player that kills you. Its nothing like sitting talking on your cell phone at your laptop, notebook or desktop playing online poker. Its much slower and you need more patience.
Loose players have almost no chance of going deep in a tournament. Now don't get me wrong, You can play loose if the table warrants it. If you have a bunch of players that fold to every raise and are playing super tight you can push more often but when you start to get called by these players you need to change up your game.
If you watch the Grinder or Gus Hansen and get the idea that playing every hand is the way to go but on TV coverage you see about 10% of the hands played prior to the final table coverage. So when you see Gus playing 20 hands in 20 minuets of coverage you really don't get the full picture.
Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun casinos both share the same mix of players from the area. Most players a middle of the road players that play for fun, hoping to get that big break. The local Pros's sit at the cash tables nipping away at he dead money stacks and occasionally play a tournament to try and score the big payday.
Pros know that the easy money is in cash. Its a different game then Tournaments, In a tournament you run out of chips and your done (outside of re buy game) so you tend to play differently. Cash games you can buy back in if you run out of cash so bankroll becomes more important.
You will see a few local pros's at this tournament and a ton of dead money. Dead money doesn't mean they just hand it to you and they will take down a few players that are far superior players just on sheer luck and some lucky breaks, And that's poker. I see it in my local games and it still drives me crazy.
I'm planning on making a game or two at Foxwoods during this event and I hope to see some of you there. I don't consider myself a pro but I can promise you I'm not dead money either. Some of my Students (Josh and Scott) will attest to that and if you cant trust a Lawyer and an Accountant then who can you trust.
Good luck folks and Ill see you on the felt.
