The Race to the Final Table is underway

2010 started off very similar to the way 2009 ended. Matt was out early, Josh showed up late, Nowik made a strong run and Willis started the cash game before dark.

With the new rules, chip stacks and a few new players, 2010 is sure to continue to bring us stories. We will see the usual suck out, Bad call, incorrect raise amount and misread like years past. The coming year brings with it the opportunity for some of the group to raise their game to the next level. Some will play better while others will falter. Tempers will flare. Some will pout. The stories will be endless as questions arise every month.

Will Scott Show again?
Is Josh serious about that Jacket?
Why is Matt so Angry?

The elusive points are almost all available to anyone who can earn them but just like last year the summer will be coming to an end quicker than you think and only a select few will have enough points to earn a seat.

February is the next chance for some of you to make your mark. A time when you can tell the group that your there to win, not just play. A good example is our January winner. Dave R is impatient. You shuffle slow, You forget to post your blind quick enough, you chit chat when its your move, He will call you on it. He is there to play. In dominating fashion he withstood countless all ins by short stacks to emerge victorious. He played tremendous heads up poker against arguably the best player in the league and won. He brushed off his sub par 2009 and brought his "A" game.

Making a statement like that, against a far superior player is what it takes in this league. There are a few players that could fall into this category. then there's the dead money. What list do you want to be on in 2010?

Now I have offered (at reasonable rates) my tutelage time after time. Some of you have taken me up on my free initial consultation. Others are trying to do it alone. Still others just show for the Food, Cash game and my witty comments. Now while I myself still continue to educate myself the with WSOP academy online and see great improvement amongst the group, there are a few that need to take the next step.

In many cases, January 2010 was a carbon copy of 2009. Players who think they can coast through were sent to the rail early, the river was both horrid and great depending on what side of the river you were on and the majority that made the final table were not a surprise. Aaron, Dave R, Pete, Kyle and Steve D are all considered above average players. I also made the table but that's a given most months. Josh also was there to the dismay of many who consider him average at best.

Missing on the final table were our 2009 Champ Rafael and his big Brother Javier. I had the duty of knocking out the High ranked Javier with a well hidden pair of Pocket Jacks. Not a great hand to many of us but it held up sending Jav to the cash game. I don't know what happened to Rafael but I cant imagine with the way his play has improved he went out without a fight.

Pete made his comeback appearance count. 6th place after a horrid beat on the river took him from one of the chip leaders down to a small stack. That hurts but 6 points and your money back ain't bad. He mentioned that he also doesn't read the blog so Ill say "F" you Pete with no chance he'll get offended.

The river killed Steve D a week before in the Enfield game, Aaron's house was the polar opposite for him. He was pushed to play several times and survived time after time to lock up 5th place and 7 points

Aaron folded his way into 4th place and 8 points. A pair of pocket fives for yours truly and a 5 on the flop had him watching the final 3 battle it out.

Kyle was next to leave us. A huge chip leader only 30 minuets prior to his 3rd place finish he ran into some bad luck and takes home 10 points.

Then there were two. The Battle of the Daves Begins. The most feared player in the league and the most angry. Chip stacks were close to even. $3000-$6000 level. And It comes Dave R's A8 - Vs Nowiks AJ. All in and an 8 on the flop gives Dave R the huge advantage and its pretty much over from there. Dave R takes home the win, 16 points. Yours truly gets a dozen points and Sets his sights on February 12th.
Already only 10 tournaments left to get the all important points. Earn your seat by summer and take the pressure off. Put the pressure on your opponents.
Improve your game and enjoy rather then stress.
Well see you in February.
